When it comes to renovating the master bathroom, many homeowners are faced with the decision of whether or not a tub is suitable for them. There are many factors to consider but what it really boils down to is personal preference. We’re going to help break down the questions that will lead you to your ultimate answer.

If you’ve bought your home to age in place, the future is something to consider when going through a bathroom renovation. Bathtubs take up a decent amount of space and can be quite difficult to get in and out of as you age. A walk-in shower allows for a zero to low threshold entrance, making it more manageable for a wheelchair or walker to get in and out of. Maintenance is also something to consider. Bathtubs require you to get on your hands and knees to clean and if you already have a shower to clean, this creates more work.

Will it be utilized?

If you’re someone who loves to take baths, that is a no-brainer, go for the tub! More than likely you have a garden tub you can’t wait to stop staring at, but with all the different options out there now, you’re sure to find one that best suits your needs and is more up to date. Lets say you’re someone who takes an occasional bath when you’re trying to relax and unwind. Really consider how you want that experience to feel. Do you want to go down the hall to the guest or kids bathroom and squeeze into that tub? Or do you want to embrace a spa like sanctuary? If you’re someone who never takes a bath and there are other bathtubs available for you to use, removing the tub from the design and focusing on creating more space for the vanities or a larger walk-in shower might be the right move.

If you plan to sell the home at some point, a question you might ask yourself is how will a tub affect the resale value of your home. If you only have 1 other bathtub in the home, removing a tub from the master bath will decrease the value of the home. This also may turn away homebuyers that have large families and need the extra space or those that want a designated tub that the kids won’t use. More storage space is one of the most common reasons that homeowners decide to renovate their kitchen. They’re tired of the countertops filling up with utensils, appliances, food and every day clutter. Luckily, there are great storage solutions available!

Spice Drawers

If you’re someone who is always fumbling through the spice cabinet, dropping them on your head because they’re too high and having to go back and forth because you forgot the garlic powder or the paprika, you may want to consider a spice drawer. Having an easily accessible drawer or cabinet next to your prep area will save a lot of frustration and headache (literally!).

You can either do a narrow spice pull-out cabinet which allows for all of your spices, oils and rubs to stay close by and organized without taking up much space (usually 9”) or the wide drawers allow for spices to be spread out and things like pots and pans or dishes to go underneath.

Mixing Cabinets

Whether you bake a lot or just a little, you may want to consider a mixing cabinet. It gives that large appliance a designated home and when you are ready to use it, you just plug it into the inside of the cabinet and lift it up. When your countertop is full of flour, eggs and chocolate chips, you’ll be glad your mixer has its own landing spot!

Trash Pullout

If there’s one thing nobody loves to look at in the kitchen – it’s trash. With a trash pull out cabinet, it’s nicely hidden away from guests and curious kids and dogs. You can get a cabinet that holds a large trash bin or two smaller bins that are great if you want to add in a recycling bin.

Unlike hardwood, LVP doesn’t expand and contract and it’s waterproof so it’s great for areas where spills are likely to occur. If your home is full of pets and kids running back and forth, an LVP with a thick wear layer (8mil+) is best suited to prevent dents, scuffs and scratches, making this flooring a durable solution. Acoustics are also something to consider when picking out flooring and since LVP is made with either a foam or cork backing, it’s great to help with noise reduction. Did I mention that LVP is also cost effective? If you are covering a large area or you’re on a budget, this is a great option to consider!

Tile Flooring

While there are a few different material options when looking at tile, porcelain and ceramic are the most commonly used for kitchen and bathroom floors. There isn’t a huge difference when it comes to the two materials but since porcelain is made from a more refined clay material and fired at higher temperatures, it’s more durable than ceramic or marble. This also makes it easier to maintain as it doesn’t require sealing and all you need is soap and warm water for cleaning.
